Man, baseball is fun to watch, but June and July seem like a blur while all these meaningless baseball games are played. College football is what I am gearing up for and we are exactly 3 months and 1 day away from kickoff.
College football just brings a new energy to my life and it is 4 plus months of pure excitement. Yes, there are problems with the BCS and Yes, it does get old with the SEC being the best conference every single year (well, not really), but there is nothing better than waking up on a Saturday and turning on College Gameday with Chris, Kirk and Lee. Growing up in Memphis, all you hear about is the SEC and boy am I lucky because it just happens to be the best conference year in and year out. There is an awesome game in the SEC every single week and it never gets old.
The one part of college football I am going to miss is actually going to the games every single Saturday. I always went to the Memphis games growing up as bad as they were, but nontheless it was college football and I loved it. Then, I got the chance to go to college at a Big 12 school and witness that kind of football for 4.5 years. Its ridiculous how much my weekend revolves around what time games start, but its true. My Saturday's from August to January literally revolve around football. My lovely girlfriend seems to think I choose sports over her, but I don't agree. She deserves an award for dating me simply for how much time I spend on watching sports. Ok OK, back to the real topic at hand.
These are some of the early season football games I am looking forward to as they should all be spectacular games:
USC @ Virginia 8/30 --Do I smell an early season upset in the land of the wahoos???
Illinois @ Missouri 8/30 --Arguably the most underrated non-conference game this season as both teams are looking to pickup from where they left off in their success of 07-08.
Tennessee @ UCLA 9/1 -- Rambling Gambling Rick Neuheisel tries to start off his first season as the Bruins head coach w/ a big time win over a very underrated SEC foe.
Miami @ Florida 9/6 --Randy Shannon's first year didn't go as planned. I don't think a trip to Gainesville is going to make him smile either, but his top 3 recruiting class and getting out of that dump of a stadium may help a little.
Oregon St. @ Penn St. 9/6 --Sammy Straughter says he is back and we will get to see right away as he leads his Beavers into Happy Valley for a very interesting game with 2 different styles.
Kansas @ South Florida 9/12 --Wait a minute. Kansas is playing a Division 1A team in the non-conference? Something must be wrong. I'll double check this.
Oklahoma @ Washington 9/12 --True Freshman QB Jake Locker felt the ups and downs of college football season but returning tailback Louis Rankin should help lighten the load a bit off Locker's shoulders this season and a visit from the Sooners might be the game they need up in Seattle to get excited for Husky football again. Ty Willingham can only hope he makes a bowl this year or he might be joining Bob Davey as an ESPN announcer.
Ohio St. @ USC 9/12 --I hope for the viewers sake Todd B. will not be playing QB and everyone can finally see what Terrelle Pryor is made of in the Colliseum against the cheating trojans.
West Virginia @ Colorado --This is division 1 football and Dan Hawkins is ready to coach. He is already gameplanning for how his defense is going to stop Pat White and Noel Devine. The Buffs did lose Hugh Charles, but they brought in a gem in Darrel Scott who is going to start right away to replace Charles at running back.
Georgia @ Arizona St. --Mark Richt and the Dogs haven't had this much hype going into a season since he has been there, but this is going to be a challenging game in Tempe. I predict what most will, Dennis Erickson's Sun Devils will put up a fight for 3 quarters as they always do and then give up tons of points in the 4th quarter and lose by a minimum two touchdowns. Moreno will be too tough to handle for a weak Pac 10 defense.
That's all I got. Now we can just all lie down and take a nap and wake up on August 28th when the real excitement begins.
